Brown Elementary School students Tyson Weatherbee and Maryann Godje are this month’s Turlock Unified School District’s Character Counts Students of the Month for the character trait of citizenship.

Tyson, a sixth grader, gave an inspirational message at the Nov. 4 TUSD Board of Trustees meeting. The wise young man could give advice to professional athletes, which he hopes to become one day.

“Before making decisions I think to myself, will this disappoint my parents, teammates and coach?” he asked. “I use this as my guide to how I make my decisions in life.”

His teacher, Amanda Mendes, says Tyson is a positive role model for other students and he helps other students in his class with a smile on his face.

Tyson serves on the student council and is known as a leader at Brown. During his speech to the Trustees he also told them that to inspire mean “to install motivation, enthusiasm and the courage to achieve more.”

Tyson hopes to attend Stanford University and become a professional athlete in either basketball or soccer.

Maryann received the best compliment a teacher can give a student. Her teacher, Rachel Watts, says Maryann is the kind of student all teachers dream about.

She is known as a leader who sets the tone in the class by showing other students an example of how to achieve success. She goes out of her way to help others.

Maryann hopes to become a veterinarian and attend University of California, Davis.
