Turlock Mayor to Wear Ravens Jersey After Wager Supporting Kaepernick

David Fransen

It's official: Turlock Mayor John Lazar will wear a Baltimore Ravens jersey to the next meeting of the Turlock City Council.

A bet is a bet, after all.

“I'm not real happy,” Lazar said.

Prior to the Super Bowl, Lazar made a wager with Mayor John Ward of Audubon, N.J. – hometown of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. It would be Turlock's Colin Kaepernick, quarterbacking the San Francisco 49ers, against Flacco and the Ravens, with the mayors' pride on the line.

If the 49ers and their Turlock-native quarterback Colin Kaepernick had won, Ward would have worn a San Francisco jersey to his next council meeting. But since the Ravens eked out a 34-31 victory when a Kaepernick comeback attempt came up just short, Lazar must wear a Baltimore jersey.

Lazar is now seeking some clarification from Ward on what exactly his punishment will be. He hopes to, perhaps, just wear Ravens colors rather than go out and buy a Ravens jersey.

“Or maybe he'll pardon me,” Lazar said with a laugh.

If there was ever a bet Lazar didn't want to pay up on, it's this one.

Even though Lazar will be clad in purple and black come Feb. 12, the mayor said he enjoyed the game and was enthused by Kaepernick's play.

“I was very proud of them,” Lazar said. “I thought it was a classic game, and no one can argue they didn't play their hardest. It was a classic.”

“I just don't want to wear purple.”
