The Christmas CanTree annual fundraising drive is returning to let Turlockers know that together, we can make a change. Turlock CanTree will hold the Can Tree Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to benefit those in need, feeding children who would otherwise go hungry over the holidays.
Organizers say that “If we don’t find generosity in our hearts, some won’t find it on the table or under the tree.”
The Turlock CanTree is 31 years strong, and has been organized by the Local Realtors and Affiliates Group for the last three years. Headed by volunteers with absolutely no paid salaries, they work to create partnerships within the community.
According to 2010 data, the Turlock Unified School District has over 13,000 students. Of those 13,000 students, 8,238 were living at poverty level. This translates to 65.14 percent of students in the district.
Although free and reduced-cost lunches are served at all school sites in town, Winter Break is 14-16 days long, including weekends. Most of the 8,238 students will not have balanced meals during this break.
Fortunately, Turlock CanTree offers a way for community members to help. Residents can contribute by purchasing tickets for family, friends, co-workers, or employees—or reserving a table for a group. Community members can also donate money or items for the live or silent auction, all of which is tax-deductible.
If nothing else, Turlock CanTree encourages community members to volunteer their time as food servers or auction spotters, or to help with set-up and cleanup. Donations of items like food, decorations and other supplies are also welcomed.
