At about 12:35am Sunday morning, Turlock Police responded to a disturbance at California Diaries in the 3600 block of W. Canal Drive.

The caller stated that Mathias Cantu, 48, of Selma, had run off from them after they had attempted to give him a drug test due to him showing up for work in his semi-truck appearing impaired.

A perimeter was set up and a few minutes later, Sergeant Lewis located Cantu hiding under some leaves in a drainage area.

Officer Schell spoke with witnesses who reported that they had observed Cantu driving his semi onto the property at a higher-than-normal rate of speed, which is what made them suspicious.

Schell then contacted Cantu and noticed that he was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence, so he asked him if he’d be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. Cantu agreed to the tests, however, performed poorly on them.

Cantu was arrested and transported to a local hospital to provide a blood sample as required by California’s implied consent law.

Cantu was then issued a driver’s license suspension order and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of driving under the influence of drugs.
