On Monday, October 12th, 2020, at approximately 8:00 pm, the Turlock Police Department received a call of an aggravated assault that had just occurred at the Planet Fitness located at 1360 W Main St. Officers began responding to the area and arrived within minutes.
When officers arrived, they located the victim in the parking lot of Planet Fitness. He reported to officers that he and John Dewitt, 60, of Turlock, who he knew and both lived in encampments nearby, had gotten into a disturbance. In the middle of the disturbance, Dewitt got upset and entered his vehicle. He then drove his vehicle up onto the curb and over planters, targeting the victim. He then struck the victim with the front of his vehicle and fled the area.
The victim sustained minor non-life threatening injuries and refused to be transported by ambulance. A short time later, officers located Dewitt near the original crime scene. He was then arrested without further incident and booked into Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence.
