Late Sunday night, a neighborhood near California State University, Stanislaus was left without power after an underground transformer failed.
Around midnight, the underground transformer failed and cut power in the neighborhood between Crowell and Walnut roads, just north of Christoffersen Parkway.
Turlock Irrigation District sent five workers to repair the transformer. The repairs took nine hours, said TID spokesperson Calvin Curtin.
“When underground transmission systems fail, it is very difficult to locate the problem,” said Curtin. “Therefore, repairs can take longer than overhead transmission lines.”
While repairs took nine hours, power returned to at least a portion of the neighborhood in under an hour.
According to Weather.com, temperatures still dipped into the the mid 80s during the time of the power outage.
The exact cause of the transformer failure is unknown at this time, but repair crews on scene said it may have been from increased air conditioner use.
