Turlock Junior High School completed the 10th Annual Stanislaus County Academic Pentathlon last Saturday in Modesto with an impressive second place finish out of nine schools.
TJHS students earned nine individual medals in gold, silver and bronze for categories such as essay, speech, science, math, language and literature. More than 230 students countywide participated in the event.
The pentathlon promotes scholastic achievement and interschool competition in academics. In the Pentathlon, 7th and 8th graders compete as individuals and as team members in speech and in a series of five tests in subject areas including
mathematics, essay writing, language arts, science and social studies.
Pentathlon Coach Wes Taylor was proud of his students.
“I had a team full of diligent, responsible, and determined students. Each one exemplified the positive characteristics that our school culture fosters. They sacrificed their time and fully dedicated themselves to the team's success. I could not be prouder of their efforts and how positively they represented our great school,” Taylor said. “I did my best to prepare them for the competition, and my efforts were supported by the rigorous instruction they receive in their classroom on an everyday basis. It's nice to see hard work get rewarded, and these students fully deserve the accolades they earned.”
