The Turlock City Arts Commission announces a new exhibition featuring works created by participants in the Images and Cancer Art Group, a component of Memorial Medical Center’s Complementary Therapy Program for cancer survivors and their family members. “This is an opportunity to share the experiences and feelings of those whose lives have been affected by cancer,” says Lisa McDermott, Turlock’s Arts Facilitator, about why the TCAC Gallery Committee wanted to hold this exhibition. “Opening the door to creative expression can help individuals cope with this difficult journey, and the artwork that results is often beautiful and meaningful to an audience far beyond the immediate circle of the artist.”
A free public reception will be held on Tuesday, May 12 from 5-7 p.m. The reception will include a short presentation of poetry by Writing Through Cancer participants Nancy Fontana, Dan Murray, Roberta Bearden and Ed Bearden, Modesto’s current Poet Laureate, and music performed by Dan Murray, also a participant in the program’s Sounds of the Heart Musical Ensemble. The exhibition will run from May 6 – June 24, 2009.
The Complementary Therapy Program is part of the Memorial Medical Center’s Cancer Services, a program accredited by the American College of Surgeons as a comprehensive cancer center for diagnosis and treatment.. Complementary therapies are those that can be used along with conventional medicine therapies that have been proven to be safe and effective. When a person is dealing with a diagnosis of cancer, complementary therapies can be miracles of comfort during the journey of recovery, healing or coping. Complementary therapies that Memorial Medical Center includes in its program are art, photography, movement, writing, music and gardening.

· The exhibition and reception will be held at the City Gallery, inside Turlock City Hall, at 156 S. Broadway in Turlock.
· The City Gallery is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and some evenings during public meetings. The City Gallery is closed on holidays.
· The City Gallery is wheelchair accessible and admission is free.
