At about 3:31am Tuesday, Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response responded to an aggravated assault that had just occurred that had just occurred in the 1800 block of Lander Avenue.
The caller reported someone had just been shot at one of the hotels, unknown which, and dispatchers could hear a lot of screaming.
Officers Ayala and Marquez were in the area and rushed to the scene, finding Jose Tamayo, 18, of Modesto, down near the Baz Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center with at least one gunshot wound. Within just two minutes of being dispatched, the officers started lifesaving efforts, including CPR.
Unfortunately, despite best efforts, medics immediately declared Tamayo deceased when they arrived on scene.
A crime scene was established, and on-call admin and detectives were notified.
Detectives arrived on scene and began their investigation, establishing that the incident stemmed from an altercation between Tamayo and the suspect, later identified as Troy Cannon, 59, of Modesto.
Utilizing license plate reader technology and collaborating with Modesto and Ceres police, detectives were able to locate and arrest Cannon later that same day.
Cannon was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle at a person, and discharging a firearm causing death in the commission of a felony.
“With the aid of license plate reader technology, our detectives were able to swiftly gather critical information and locate the suspect,” said Chief Hedden. “This case serves as a powerful reminder of how technology is reshaping law enforcement, helping us protect the public and resolve cases more quickly.”
