A 25-year-old man is facing robbery charges after allegedly stealing merchandise from Walmart Neighborhood Market and throwing a fruit cup while attempting to flee store security.

The suspect, Matthew Santos Campos, 25, was later located and arrested by officers following a received report claiming Campos had been assaulted by store security.

According to Turlock police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis, Campos entered the Walmart, located at 2480 Geer Rd., at approximately 5:10 p.m. and allegedly placed several items into a bag.

Campos later paid for some items, said Lewis, but attempted to leave the store without paying for all of the merchandise and was later stopped by store security services.

Store security confronted Campos, and the suspect allegedly dropped the bag of merchandise and threw a fruit cup at security, said Lewis.

Campos was able to flee in a vehicle.

While officers were searching for a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car, the Turlock Police Department received a report from the suspect’s partner claiming Campos had been assaulted in the store, said Lewis.

Officers located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s at the 7-Eleven on Lander Avenue around 6 p.m., said Lewis.

Campos was not assaulted, according to Lewis.

He was arrested and booked for robbery.
