Students from the Hunger Network Club at CSU Stanislaus are partnering with Crossroads Church and the We Care Program in Turlock to hold a yard sale to benefit the We Care Program. The We Care Program is a local non-profit agency whose mission is to provide transitional and emergency shelter and support services for the Turlock homeless community.
Proceeds from the yard sale will help to support the We Care Program to provide housing and transitional services for those that find themselves homeless.
Originated through the efforts of local service providers and concerned citizens the We Care Program – Turlock (WCP) was incorporated in 2003. WCP provides shelter for up to 49 homeless men per night during the worst part of the winter. During the 2011/2012 shelter season, the WCP housed 148 unduplicated individuals and provided 4,651 shelter beds.
Over the past ten seasons the We Care Shelter has provided 49,593 shelter beds to homeless individuals in our community. The We Care Program provides housing programs for homeless individuals and focuses on men who utilize the program’s shelter services. The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP) and the program’s new Supportive Housing Program (SHP) combined have the capacity to house a minimum of 6 homeless individuals per year.
The HPRP program is case management based and provides housing search and placement assistance to homeless individuals with the long-term goal of permanent stable housing. The SHP program has case management and support services that provide participants with the necessary skills and resources for moving into permanent sustainable housing situations.
“Our goal is to assist the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in our community to utilize all of the available resources so that they can successfully maintain their housing or move out of homelessness into permanent stable housing,” stated WCP Turlock Executive Director Jan Tucker.
Tucker reported that last year’s sale brought in a little over $2,000. This year’s goal is set to $3,000.
“We gladly accept donations, in fact community donations of goods are what allow us to be able to have this fundraising event,” stated Tucker.
The WCP is currently accepting donations by appointment at their shelter building located at 219 S. Broadway or on May 4th after 3:00 p.m. at Crossroads Church.
If you would like to donate items (tax deductible) or volunteer to assist with the event, please contact Debbie Gutierrez at 209-620-2414 or Jan Tucker at 209-664-2003.
This fun, important event will take place at Crossroads Church, located at 1360 N. Johnson Road, on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 & 6, 2012 from 7:00am to 1:00pm.
