The largest local art exhibit held in Turlock each year is currently on display at the Carnegie Arts Center in Downtown Turlock.

The Spring Juried Art Show features 88 selected art pieces in five different categories, by artists ranging from Merced to the Bay Area. The show will be on display at the Carnegie Arts Center until June 30.

This year, the Carnegie Arts Center and the Turlock City Arts Commission received just over 200 art submissions for the show. After careful selection by an jury of art experts, 88 pieces were accepted for the show from five categories – Oil and Acrylic, Sculpture, Photography, Works on Paper, and Mixed Media, which also includes printmaking and digital art.

The Best of Show Award, which includes a $1,000 prize, went to Milt Bullard for his pen-and-ink drawing “Happy Isles.” Bullard, who used to live in Turlock, now resides in Modesto.

Another Turlock first place winner was Tara Schendel, in the photography category. Schendel’s black and white photograph features the inside of an old Turlock barbershop.

The 2013 Spring Juried Art Show marks the 31st year that the Turlock City Arts Commission has organized the annual show.

The Spring Juried Art Show was historically held at the Carnegie Arts Center before the building burned down in 2005. In 2012, the Carnegie Arts Center reopened and the Spring Juried Art Show moved back to its original location after being held at the Turlock City Hall Gallery for many years.

“We work in a collaboration with the Arts Commission to help organize the show each year, and the Carnegie is a great venue for them to show off all their hard work,” said Lisa McDermott of the Carnegie Arts Center. “It’s the biggest display of art from the region. It’s great and it looks fantastic.”

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Carnegie Arts Center will also feature a Gallery Talk featuring ten artists who won awards in the Spring Juried Art Show. The artists will be available to discuss their work, and answer questions from the public.

“It’s a good chance to learn a little bit more and meet people face-to-face and see what they do,” said McDermott. “It should be a pretty popular event.”

The Carnegie Arts Center is located at 250 N. Broadway in Turlock.
