TURLOCK – California State University, Stanislaus faculty members Dr. Agnes Riedmann, a Professor of Sociology, and Dr. Molly Crumpton Winter, an Associate Professor of English, have been selected for Fulbright Awards that will take them to Poland and Japan respectively during the 2008-09 academic year.
In announcing the Fulbright Awards, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Dr. Carolyn J. Stefanco said Riedmann and Crumpton Winter are two of only 800 faculty and professionals from the United States who have been selected to teach abroad during the current academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program.
“The Fulbright Program is the premier international educational exchange program in the United States, and it is a distinct honor to have two faculty members from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences named Fulbright Scholars in the same academic year,” Stefanco said. “The selection of Riedmann and Crumpton Winter signify the outstanding contributions each has made in their respective fields of study, and also indicate the quality of the educational experience we offer to students in the College, and at the University as a whole. We look forward to the return of these faculty members to campus, and all that they will share with students and faculty alike about their experiences in Poland and Japan.”
Stefanco served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Zagreb in Croatia in Fall 2007. She taught a women’s history course and conducted a cross-cultural examination of the curriculum transformation process taking place in Croatia, with particular attention to the degree to which content and concerns about gender and ethnicity have been integrated into university courses.
Riedmann, co-author of a popular book now in its 10th edition titled “Marriages and Families: Making Choices Throughout the Life Cycle,” is currently lecturing at the Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR) at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. She will teach and advise students from 20 different countries and also design and conduct a course on the sociology of families during Eastern Europe’s transition from communism to capitalism.
Riedmann, whose assignment started in October and continues through July 2009, also authored an earlier book titled “Science that Colonizes, A Critique of Fertility,” based on her research in Africa. It is Riedmann’s second Fulbright award, her first having come as a graduate student that enabled her to conduct dissertation research at Australian National University, where she worked for a year in 1988.
Crumpton Winter, who recently authored a book titled “American Narratives, Multiethnic Writing in the Age of Realism,” will lecture from January through June 2009 at the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. She will teach American literature with an emphasis on multicultural and Asian American literature. Crumpton Winter’s main area of expertise is the cross-cultural study of ethnic American literatures. Crumpton Winter is co-editor of “The Medium’s Burden: A Judith Ortiz Cofer Casebook” scheduled for publication this year and is working on a book-length study about multiethnic California literature.
In recognition of her accomplishments as a teacher and scholar, Crumpton Winter received the 2007-08 Elizabeth Anne B. Papageorge Faculty Development Award.
