As schools across the nation celebrate the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss, the Turlock Public Library is making birthday plans of its own.
The Turlock Teachers Association will provide a reading of this year’s Read Across America selection, “Our California” by Pam Munoz Ryan, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Turlock Public Library.
“We wanted to take this opportunity to work with our public library and offer this opportunity for children and parents,” said Turlock Teachers Association President Julie Shipman. “There will also be coloring pages, bookmarks, and information for parents on reading aloud to their children.”
Turlock Unified School District elementary school teachers will also have special readers come into their classrooms on Friday, said Shipman.
Nationwide, more than 45 million participants are expected to join the National Education Association’s 16th annual Read Across America Day celebration this year. On March 1, a celebrity-studded cast of individuals will join hundreds of local public school students to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
According to the National Education Association, studies have shown that kids who read – and are read to – do better in school and in life.
The Turlock Public Library is located at 550 N. Minaret Avenue in Turlock. For more information, call (209) 664-8100.
