The much anticipated exhibit “Picasso: 25 years of Edition Ceramics from the Rosenbaum Collection,” opens this Sunday at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock.
From Sunday to mid-January patrons can peruse ceramics created by Pablo Picasso in collaboration with George and Suzanne Ramie and the artisans at their Madoura pottery workshop in France.
The exhibit at Carnegie is the first stop in a national tour. Amongst the ceramics on display will be two original Picasso pieces and 45 other ceramic works including plates, bowls, pitchers, vases and plaques designed by him and produced in limited editions by the Madoura studio. In addition, there will be posters, photographs and other memorabilia.
“It’s always an exciting time to have a great artist like Picasso on exhibit,” said Rebecca Phillips Abbott, Executive Director and Curator at the Carnegie Arts Center. “He was active and famous for nearly three quarters of the 20th century, and was the first to introduce a number of different art movements. As it relates to ceramics, Picasso was the earliest to treat it as a fine art discipline like sculpture and painting.”
The exhibit was curated by Gerald Nordland, noted author and independent curator, and former director of the San Francisco Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Washington D.C. Gallery of Modern Art, and the Wight Gallery at University of California, Los Angeles.
In addition to seeing the works of Picasso, families are encouraged to visit Carnegie on Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. when the Center will hold a free Family Friday “Play with Clay”
The Carnegie Arts Center is open from Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is 12$ and children 12 and under free.
