At about 11:52pm Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol, Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response responded to a traffic hazard southbound Highway 99 just south of W. Taylor Road.

It was reported a pedestrian was lying in one of the lanes and multiple vehicles were pulling over on the shoulder.

When units arrived on scene, they found who was later identified as Jonathan McKnight, 35, of Ceres, deceased in the right lane after being run over by several vehicles that didn’t stop.

A white 2013 GMC Terrain was also found in the embankment on the northbound side between the freeway and off-ramp.

The white Terrain was later discovered to belong to McKnight and had been involved in an attempted robbery that Madera Police were investigating in the 1400 block of W. Robertson Boulevard.

Turlock City News reached out to Madera Police for comment but didn’t receive a reply at the time of this writing.

Officers began investigating and so far, believe that McKnight had left his vehicle after driving it into the embankment and run westbound across the northbound lanes into the southbound lanes. While in the southbound lanes, McKnight was struck by an unknown vehicle that continued driving. McKnight then came to final rest in the right lane and was subsequently run over by several other vehicles that also continued driving.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist is encouraged to call Officer Mitchell at 209-545-7440.
