At about 10:37pm Friday, Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and Patterson District Ambulance responded to an aggravated assault that had just occurred in front of A’s Barbershop in the 2400 block of W. Monte Vista Avenue.
The caller reported that a man had just been stabbed.
When units arrived on scene, they found the victim, later identified as Enrique Gomez, 49, of Turlock, down in front of the business and began CPR.
Gomez was initially going to be transported to the hospital, but was declared deceased on scene at 11:08pm.
A crime scene was established, and on-call admin and detectives were notified.
Detectives arrived on scene and began their investigation, establishing that the incident stemmed from a brief verbal altercation about road rage at a nearby apartment complex. The confrontation escalated to a physical altercation, culminating in the stabbing.
After reviewing collected evidence and witness statements, detectives quickly identified the suspect, Ahmad Abweny, 28, of Modesto, and his vehicle.
Utilizing license plate reader technology and collaborating with Modesto Police, detectives were able to locate and arrest Abweny just hours after the incident.
Abweny was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of murder.
“The use of license plate reader technology allowed our detectives to quickly piece together critical evidence and apprehend the suspect,” said Chief Hedden. “This case demonstrates the power of modern technology in enhancing public safety and ensuring prompt resolution for any crime committed in our city.”
“The Turlock Police Department extends its gratitude to the Modesto Police Department for their crucial assistance during the investigation,” said Public Affairs Analyst Sanchez.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist is encouraged to call Detective Ulrich at 209-668-6570.
