At about 8:18pm Sunday night, Turlock Fire, Modesto Fire, Turlock Police, Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit, and American Medical Response responded to a structure fire at Target in the 3000 block of Countryside Drive.
Officers arrived on scene before firefighters and were notified by employees that there was a man in the electronics department breaking display cases and stealing merchandise.
Other officers were notified who quickly set up around the store and caught the suspect attempting to flee using an emergency exit in the back of the store.
He was detained and identified as Robert Strassburger, 32, of San Pedro.
Through the investigation, it was discovered that Strassburger had stolen over $2,000 worth of merchandise.
Strassburger was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of grand theft and burglary.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they found that a ballast had scorched and sparked near a light, however, there was no fire.
Firefighters turned off power while the Turlock Irrigation District disconnected the ballast until repairs can be made.
No injuries were reported.
The two incidents turned out to be unrelated and it was just a coincidence that they happened at the same time.
