Man Arrested by Sheriff’s Canine After Hours-Long Armed Standoff

At about 2:25pm Monday, Denair Fire and the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle fire at a residence in the 2900 block of Salluce Drive in Denair.

Several neighbors and passersby reported a motorcycle on fire in the driveway and also stated it appeared the homeowner and his wife were arguing.

Deputies later learned the homeowner was Hurshel Myers, 59, of Denair, and that he was armed with a firearm.

When deputies and firefighters arrived on scene, they were able to extinguish the fire and move Myers’ wife to safety.

Myers began threatening deputies and firefighters while still armed with a firearm.

Deputies quickly established containment of the residence, surrounded it with a perimeter, and began bringing in other outside resources to help peacefully resolve the situation.

Negotiations were sporadic and difficult to establish with Myers, who had barricaded himself inside his home and was refusing to surrender.

Deputies obtained a warrant of arrest for Myers, charging him with attempting to deter or resist an executive officer in the performance of their duty by means of threat or violence, threatening to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury to another person, exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, and exhibiting a firearm to a peace officer in a threatening manner.

The standoff lasted until 6:37pm, which is when Myers finally came outside but still refused to comply with deputies’ lawful orders.

A short struggle ensued in the front yard but was brought to an end by a bite from Canine Renzo.

K9 Renzo is a 7-year-old Dutch Shepherd whose been assigned to Deputy Garcia since February 2019.

Myers was arrested and transported to a local hospital for medical clearance.

Myers was then booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of resisting a peace officer and his warrant.

Deputies had also obtained a search warrant which resulted in the seizure of 17 firearms and hundreds, if not thousands, of rounds of ammunition for evidence and safekeeping.

“We thank all of those who participated in today’s critical incident response and are grateful this situation didn’t escalate or evolve into something much worse,” said Sergeant Schwartz.
