Man Arrested After Trying to Access Police Vehicle

At about 1:50am Thursday, Turlock Police Officer Kauffman got out with a suspicious person behind the Public Safety Facility in the 200 block of N. Broadway.

Kauffman was unloading his patrol vehicle in preparation for his shift to end in 10 minutes, when he noticed a man later identified as Robert Pereda, 30, of Turlock, trying to open the trunk of a police vehicle parked on W. Olive Avenue.

Pereda was detained in handcuffs and identified. He was clear and trespass admonished from a couple of places that weren’t nearby.

The two trespass admonishments stemmed from incidents that had occurred last year. The first incident occurred in March at an abandoned residence in the 1500 block of Lander Avenue, where Pereda had returned to light a fire after being repeatedly trespass admonished. The second incident had occurred in October at a residence in the 600 block of S. Center Street, where Pereda had knocked on someone’s front door in the middle of the night and begun to stare into their backyard.

There wasn’t any damage to the patrol vehicle.

Pereda was clearly under the influence of some sort of stimulant and unable to care for himself, partaking in acts that are seen as unusual by the general public and making nonsensical statements, so he was arrested.

During a search incident to arrest, officers located drug paraphernalia on Pereda’s person.

Pereda was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of disorderly conduct.
