At about 11:32pm Thursday, Turlock Police Officer Marquez attempted to make a traffic stop at Branding Iron Drive and N. Tully Road.
The vehicle was a Chevrolet pickup truck displaying a BMW convertible’s license plate and had been involved in a larceny at 6:10am that same morning where a generator had been taken from the backyard of a residence in the 2800 block of E. Hawkeye Avenue.
Marquez also recognized the vehicle’s driver as Steven Frye, 28, of Turlock, and knew he was on post-release community supervision.
Frye briefly stopped for Marquez, but refused to show his hands. Frye then took off and a short pursuit ensued around the neighborhood, which ended in less than a minute after crashing into two parked and unoccupied vehicles in the 900 block of Winterpark Lane.
Frye then legbailed from the vehicle but was quickly taken into custody at the next property over from the collision.
When Marquez had his dispatcher run Frye, he confirmed he was on post-release community supervision for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or person addicted to a narcotic and discovered he had a no-bail felony bench warrant out of Modesto for the same charge. He was also unlicensed and on probation for possession of methamphetamines.
After running the vehicle’s VIN, it was discovered to have been reported stolen on Monday, August 12, from the Boardwalk Apartments in the 900 block of W. Zeering Road. The vehicle’s owner had gotten home after a week and noticed it was missing.
Frye was also found to be in possession of burglary tools and a deceased man’s wallet.
The generator taken during the earlier larceny wasn’t located.
The vehicle was removed from the stolen vehicle system and towed away. It was wrecked, but not stripped or burned. Both of its license plates were also missing and the BMW’s license plate was removed from it.
Marquez then called the on-call deputy probation officer and informed him of what had occurred. The DPO found there was probable cause a violation of PRCS had occurred and authorized a flash.
Frye was arrested and transported to Doctors Medical Center for medical clearance.
Afterward, Frye was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of auto theft, buying or receiving a stolen vehicle, fleeing from a peace officer by vehicle with disregard for public safety, possession of burglary tools, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, violation of post-release community supervision, and his warrant.
