Man Arrested After Going on Rampage at VFW

At about 8:38pm Sunday, Turlock Police responded to a disturbance in progress at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5059 in the 1400 block of E. Linwood Avenue.

The caller reported a man in a Honda Accord had run into a fence.

Officers arrived on scene and located a downed gate and six vehicles with damage, ranging from broken windows to slashed tires. The damage caused was well in excess of $400.

Through the investigation, the incident was determined to have started after a drunk man had become upset over a football game on television. The man had to be forcefully removed from the business which is when he became irate, started his rampage, and fled in his vehicle.

Modesto Police’s Air Support Unit was able to locate the man’s vehicle driving recklessly in rural Delhi with what appeared to be damage.

Officer Rocha caught up to the vehicle and conducted a high-risk stop at Cortez Avenue and North Avenue.

Several officers arrived to assist, including one who drove a new patrol vehicle into a chain, scratching its hood.

Officers removed Leonard Ayala, 42, of Turlock, from his vehicle and detained him at gunpoint.

Ayala was found to be carrying a switchblade knife and also displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined Ayala was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.

Through the investigation, Ayala was positively identified as the vandalism suspect.

Ayala was issued a driver’s license suspension order.

Afterward, Ayala was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on seven counts of vandalism, carrying a switchblade knife, battery, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additionally, Ayala’s vehicle was towed.
