At about 2:20am Thursday, Turlock Police responded to a battery in progress at a residence in the 1300 block of Myrtle Street.

The caller reported a man had just entered the residence and punched him, before pulling out a pocket knife in a threatening manner and telling him to leave. The caller ran next door to call the police, stating the suspect was still inside the home with his friend he was with and her two daughters.

Officers arrived on scene and spent nearly an hour trying to get someone to come to the front door, but no one would.

Eventually, an officer watched someone walk into a shed in the backyard who ignored him.

A short amount of time later, the two previously mentioned children emerged from the backyard shed and were joined by their mother a minute later who came out through the back door of the house.

Officers couldn’t get compliance from the mother in the backyard, so they forced entry into the backyard by kicking down some fence boards, concerned for the safety of her and her children.

Eventually, officers entered the residence through the back door to conduct a security sweep. While doing so, they found Arthur Legrande, 69, of Turlock, hiding in a room.

Through the investigation, officers learned that Legrande was the boyfriend of the two children’s mother, and had come home to find her in the bedroom with the caller, suspecting she was cheating on him. Legrande battered his girlfriend, causing an injury to her face.

Legrande was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of domestic violence inflicting corporal injury and resisting a peace officer.
