San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has advanced to the quarterfinals of a contest to select the cover star for the “Madden NFL 15” video game.

Kap faced Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles in the first round of the contest and received 57 percent of the online vote to move on.

Kap will now face a familiar opponent in Carolina Panthers linebacker and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly. Kap and the 49ers sent the Panthers packing in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs last year.

Kaepernick and Kuechly also faced off in Kap’s last college game, the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, when Kaepernick led the University of Nevada, Reno Wolfpack to a 20-13 victory over Kuechly’s Boston College Eagles.

If Kap is able to advance over Kuechly, the table is set for Kaepernick to face Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman in the semifinals.

The winner will be decided by a fan vote. Voters can vote in each matchup once per day. To see the full bracket and vote, visit http://espn.go.com/nfl/feature/maddenvote
