Julien Elementary sixth-grader Gloria Park won first place in the Stanislaus County Office of Education Spelling Bee held Wednesday at Gregori High School in Modesto.
Park beat out 72 other elementary school students from 40 different Stanislaus County schools. She shared the champion title with Leah Raby, a fifth-grade student from Paradise Elementary.
Some of the words she spelled correctly included, conscientious, idiosyncrasy, irreplaceable and seismologist.
Park and Raby, along with alternate champion, fifth-grader Lee Qin of Apricot Valley Elementary, will go on to represent Stanislaus County at the State Championship to be held in Stockton on April 18, 2015.
The Stanislaus County Spelling Bee was sponsored by Wells Fargo and the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County.
