The Turlock Police Department is warning Turlockers of an ongoing scam involving suspects posing as Internal Revenue Services agents.
Turlock police originally warned Turlockers of the scam in March, after receiving a report of fraud on Feb. 28. At that time, a victim was told that he was behind on his taxes and he needed to wire transfer a set amount of money to an account given by the scammer, or face jail time.
On Thursday, the Turlock Police Department announced that “officers have taken an alarming amount of fraud reports involving subjects posing as IRS agents who have defrauded victims of thousands of dollars.”
With the deadline to file taxes passing this week, it is easy to fall victim to such a scam.
The Turlock Police Department said that Turlockers should not give scammers money if they call.
Those who receive a phone call from anyone claiming to be an IRS agent is advised to hang up immediately and call the IRS Assistance Hotline at 1-800-829-1040, says the Turlock Police Department.
If the “agent” claims you will be arrested if account are not paid, hang up and the Turlock Police Department at 209-668-1200 to report the incident.
The elderly are those being primarily targeted, so the Turlock Police Department asks that you inform any elderly relatives on how they can protect themselves.
