Hit and run driver crashes during police pursuit Saturday afternoon

On Saturday, January 23rd, 2021, at approximately 2:50 pm, the Turlock Police Department received a call of a hit and run collision that just occurred on the southbound State Route 99 off ramp at W Monte Vista Ave. The caller reported that he was hit by a white Chevrolet Silverado that stopped briefly but took off a short time later.

An officer responded to the scene to take the report while others checked the area for the suspect vehicle. An officer travelling southbound on State Route 99 near W Main St observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. The officer attempted a traffic stop on it and the suspect originally yielded, however, took off after a few seconds. A pursuit ensued southbound on State Route 99 until the suspect exited on the Lander Ave off ramp and was involved in a single vehicle rollover collision.

Medical aid was rendered to the suspect by officers, who was identified as Jesus Marin, 26, of Merced until an ambulance could arrive. When the ambulance arrived, Marin was loaded on to it and transported to a local area hospital. Marin was released from the hospital a short time later. Marin currently has a warrant out of the Turlock Police Department for flight from a peace officer threatening public safety and driving under the influence.

Because both collisions occurred on freeway off ramps, the California Highway Patrol responded to investigate them. Throughout the course of their investigation for the first collision, they determined that Marin was in the far right turn lane of the southbound off ramp at W Monte Vista Ave in his 2011 Chevy pickup when he rear ended a 2016 Acura SUV being driven by Satnam Uppal, 58, of Turlock, stopped at the red light at the bottom of the ramp. Marin then exited the vehicle with his two 26-year old female passengers and reentered it alone a short time later. No one sustained any injuries from this collision.

For the second collision, the California Highway Patrol determined that Marin was in the far left turn lane of the southbound off ramp at Lander Ave in his 2011 Chevy pickup when he struck a concrete curb that caused him to overturn. Marin sustained a broken right leg and multiple minor lacerations throughout his body.
