Grocery Outlet, Planet Fitness Coming to Turlock

TurlockCityNews.com|

Turlock city staff has confirmed that a Grocery Outlet and a Planet Fitness will both soon be coming to local shopping center.

Both will inhabit the long-dormant shopping center at the intersection of West Main Street and South Soderquist Avenue, which formerly held a Dollar City.

Grocery Outlet is ready to pull building permits, Turlock Assistant to the City Manager for Housing and Economic Development Maryn Pitt said, while Planet Fitness has signed a lease for the center.

Concord-based developers New Urban Community Partners previously intended to build a Mi Pueblo Food Center at the site, but its development had been stalled since 2011. Mi Pueblo will no longer be coming to the shopping center, Pitt confirmed, with Grocery Outlet taking its intended place.

NUCP received an $800,000 grant in October 2013 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help a new westside Turlock supermarket to open. The market was not named as part of the grant.

The family-run, Berkeley-based Grocery Outlet supermarket chain has been in existence since 1946. It has more than 200 independently operated stores across the Western U.S., and claims to offer brand name products at up to 50 percent off conventional retail prices. The chain operates two stores in Modesto, and one in Oakdale.

Planet Fitness is a New Hampshire-based gym chain which actively discourages bodybuilding and powerlifting. The “Judgment Free” gym offers low-cost memberships, and a “Lunk Alarm” which is set off to discourage grunting while lifting weights. The chain’s nearly 800 locations are spread across 48 states, with two in Modesto.

A third major tenant is expected to occupy the center as well, Pitt said.

Developers of the shopping center did not return requests for further comment on the development.
