Connecting Pont Church of the Nazarene in Denair will hold its Fourth Annual Cruzin’ Car Show Benefit on Saturday, aiding a child with a genetic disorder.
The car show will benefit Charleston “Cash” Goeppert who in March of 2010, at just three-and-a-half months old, was diagnosed with Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The common genetic disorder causes children have no muscle control.
Charleston was given six months to live. Most children with Type 1 SMA die before the age of two due to respiratory failure. But today, Cash is a strong willed three-year-old with the heart of a classic sports car engine.
Due to the lack of muscle control, Charleston has a feeding tube and a tracheostomy and remains on a ventilator constantly. He is able to move some in water and with the assistance of slings.
Children with SMA have muscular issues, they remain cognitively intact. Charleston is very bright and sociable and has started homebound preschool.
It is estimated that children with SMA require close to $1 million in medical expenses each year due to their round-the-clock care. Ashley, his mother, is a registered nurse but quit her job to take care of Charleston. Cameron, his father, is a paramedic and works for American Medical Response in Turlock.
The money raised at Saturday's car show will go directly to the Goeppert family to help pay for a variety of current needs, including home modifications as well as vehicle modifications.
Vehicle entries cost $25 for the first and second vehicles. There is no charge for more than three vehicles. Entries must be received and paid in-full prior to the day of the event. Entries will be allowed on the day of the event, but a $5 late fee will be assessed per vehicle, for up to two vehicles. First through third place awards and participations awards will be given.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the show runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
