A $1 million dollar reconstruction of Turlock's Fulkerth Road is just a few days from completion, according to Turlock Chief Building Official Eric Picciano.

“It's really, really close,” Picciano said. “Its 99 percent done”

The reconstruction effort saw Turlock grind away the old, bumpy asphalt, replacing the surface with a state-of-the-art rubberized asphalt – the first use of the surface in the city. The rubberized asphalt is expected to be longer-lasting than traditional pavement, provide a quieter ride, and cause less wear-and-tear on vehicles' tires.

Construction, which has closed lanes and disrupted traffic since May 13, was originally supposed to wrap up on June 28. Though all major road construction has been done, putting an end to the traffic snarls, some minor elements like striping remain.

“It's right there,” Picciano said.

The project was funded with $647,448 in federal transportation grants, $305,137 in gas tax revenues, and a $122,000 Cal-Recycle state grant.

No major issues were encountered during the construction.

“It's a nice riding road,” Picciano said. “We're pleased with how it turned out.”
