With shaggy grey hair and beautifully crafted guitars, Three Dog Night promised listeners a trip back to the 1970s last Friday night, harmonizing their old hits and introducing a few newer songs to old fans.
There were whistles and cheers and plenty of beer runs during the hour and a half set at the Bud Light Free Variety Stage, as the band played hits like “Shambala.”
Appreciating the smooth voices of the band, Fair-goers joyfully clapped along to the music and between songs, the band often gave background on themselves and the music. Three Dog Night had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, including 3 No. 1 singles, 11 Top 10's, 18 straight Top 20's, 7 million-selling singles and 12 straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs and their hits appeared on best selling charts in all genres (pop, rock and country).
Matching the music, the weather was breezy and cool during the concert, providing sweet relief for Fair-goers listening to old fashioned love songs.
The band remarked on it being such a nice night, but laughed at the food fare, noting that deep fried jalapenos would sure “put a fire in your butt.”
“How many remember 1974?” vocalist Cory Wells asked, with the majority of the audience raising their hands.
Perhaps the only couple moments that reminded the crowd it’s 2014 were the modern “rap” version of “Mama Told Me” slipped into the middle of the song with gold chain and all, and the plug to buy their songs online at their website.
Wells also explained that a fan once told him he believed “Mama Told Me” was the great great great granddad of rap music to which Wells responded, “Man, what were you smoking? Have anymore?”
The band wrapped up their set with their hit “Joy to the World.”
