At about 11:39pm Sunday night, Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response responded to a traffic collision at W. Monte Vista Avenue and Countryside Drive.
When units arrived on scene, they found that a silver 2002 Toyota Highlander had gone up onto a pedestrian island, taken down a bicycle crossing button, and crashed into a traffic signal pole.
The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Bailey Sanchez, 25, of Turlock, didn’t suffer any injuries.
While speaking with Sanchez, officers noticed that he was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence, so they asked him if he’d be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. Sanchez initially agreed and performed poorly on two of the three tests, but refused to participate in the third.
Officers then asked Sanchez if he’d be willing to blow into a preliminary alcohol screening device, which he also refused.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined that Sanchez was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested.
Sanchez was transported to Doctors Medical Center where he provided a blood sample as required by California’s implied consent law.
It should also be noted that Sanchez was on parole for voluntary manslaughter.
Back in 2018, Sanchez and another man had gotten into an altercation with their victim near Downtown Turlock. During the altercation, Sanchez had beat the victim to the ground in a field, at which point his codefendant ran the victim over multiple times, killing him.
Sanchez was sentenced to serve 80 months in state prison for voluntary manslaughter and auto theft, while his codefendant was sentenced to serve 15 years to life for murder. Sanchez had recently been released on parole.
Officers called a parole agent and informed him of what had occurred. The agent found that there was probable cause a violation of parole had occurred, so he authorized that Sanchez be held until a parole revocation hearing can take place.
Sanchez was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and violation of parole.
He was also issued a driver’s license suspension order and his vehicle was impounded.
