On Monday, October 18th, 2021, at 2:27 pm, the Turlock Police Department, Turlock Fire Department, and American Medical Response were dispatched to a reported vehicle collision with unknown injuries in the 400 block of S Tegner Rd, Turlock.
When crews arrived on scene, they located a single vehicle involved which was a black GMC SUV.
The vehicle had two occupants, a father, later identified as Nilton Quintocarhuamaca, 38, of Hilmar, and his young son. Both suffered minor injuries. Quintocarhuamaca refused to be transported to the hospital but his son was airlifted by PHI Air Medical Services to a regional hospital as a precautionary measure.
The vehicle sustained major damage and was deemed inoperable as a result of the collision, requiring it to be towed away. Union Pacific Railroad responded to secure their equipment until repairs could be made.
Officers began investigating and determined that the vehicle was traveling northbound on S Tegner Rd at high rates of speed when for an unknown reason, as it approached the railroad crossing, it veered into railroad crossing equipment, brought it down, and dragged it about 200 feet to where it came to final rest.
While investigating, officers noticed signs of intoxication coming from Quintocarhuamaca. Officers conducted standardized field sobriety tests on him and had him blow into a preliminary alcohol screening device, which ultimately made them make the decision to place him under arrest.
Quintocarhuamaca was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater causing injury and child abuse causing injury.
