Young artists have a new opportunity to see their work recognized on a national level, through the 2013 10th Congressional District Art Competition.
One winner will be invited to share his or her artwork at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
“The Congressional Art Competition is a wonderful way for the students of California’s 10th Congressional District to share their talents and a piece of our community with the rest of the nation,” said U.S. Rep. Denham (R-Turlock). “I encourage all interested students to submit their entries to this year’s competition, and I look forward to seeing the creativity the young artists of our district have to offer.”
The competition allows high school students nationwide to showcase their artwork, district-by-district. Each year, every member of congress is invited to choose one grand prize entry from his or her district to send to Washington, D.C.
Last year, Rep. Denham chose Gabriela Santellano of Fresno for her painting entitled “Light.” The 2012 Art Competition winners were presented awards by Denham at a reception held at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock.
Since its creation in 1982, more than 650,000 students have participated in the competition nationwide.
The winning student and one guest will be invited to an awards ceremony hosted on Capitol Hill during the summer of 2013. The awards reception brings together all of the winning artists in the official unveiling of their artwork and features a celebrity guest.
Each district winner will also have his or her piece displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol. As thousands of visitors pass through the Cannon Tunnel each year, the young artists' art will be exposed on a national level.
All artwork and signed release forms must be delivered to Denham’s Modesto office at 4701 Sisk Road, Ste. 202, no later than 5 p.m. on April 4. Judging will take place prior to May 1, and a reception will be scheduled to announce the first, second and third place winners.
Guidelines for the competition are as follows:
– All participants must be high school students residing or attending high school in the 10th District. Visit www.house.gov and enter your zip code to find or confirm your U.S. Representative.
– Artwork must be two dimensional, weigh no more than 15lbs, and must be no larger than 28 inches high, 28 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. Please note that these are the maximum dimensions, including the frame.
– Each entry must not violate any U.S. copyright laws and must be original in design, concept, and execution.
– A release form certifying the originality of the artwork must be signed by both the student and the student’s art teacher.
