An incredible season for the California State University, Stanislaus Women’s Soccer team came to an end on Sunday, losing 4-3 in a shootout after a scoreless match.
The Warriors opponent, No. 7 ranked Colorado School of Mines (16-1-6), now advances to Louisville, Kentucky to face Rollins in the final four of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
CSU Stanislaus (16-4-2) battled hard for the entire match, but couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net.
"As a coach in a big game you hope that your team gives an effort and performance worthy of the moment. There is no doubt we did that today," head coach Gabriel Bolton told Warrior Athletics. "We pounded their goal for 110 minutes. Full credit to Mines they are a terrific defensive team and did not concede. But I can't ask for anything more from our players. They were amazing."
The hard-fought match couldn’t be decided in regular time and an additional two overtime periods wasn’t enough for these two teams.
The Warriors had their chances, and controlled much of the game, but couldn’t make the most of the opportunities. In the shootout, the team came up just short, losing 4-3.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, this Warriors’ team had a historic run — which included the first three NCAA tournament wins in the program’s history.
