California State University, Stanislaus is one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S.A. and Canada, according to The Princeton Review. The well-known education services company selected CSU Stanislaus for inclusion in the newly released edition of its publication, “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 322 Green Colleges: 2012 Edition," published in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council.
“CSU Stanislaus joins the ranks of outstanding universities and colleges nationwide that are leading the green movement through various programs and initiatives,” said Melody Maffei, Interim Associate Vice President of Facilities Services at CSU Stanislaus.
Princeton Review tallied Green Ratings for 768 institutions. The resulting scores (scaled from 60 to 99) were based on questions about each institution’s sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. The top 322 schools received scores of 83 or above. CSU Stanislaus scored 87.
"College-bound students are increasingly interested in sustainability issues," said Robert Franek, Senior Vice President and Publisher of The Princeton Review. “Among 7,445 college applicants who participated in our 2012 ‘College Hopes & Worries Survey,’ nearly 7 out of 10 (68 percent) told us that having information about a school’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend.”
The University Student Union (USU) demonstrates an example of students taking the initiative to promote sustainability at California State University Stanislaus through their USU Eco Warriors program. The USU Eco Warriors is a student volunteer program that provides sustainability focused programs and events. They provide education and entertainment to the student body about the importance of living a sustainable lifestyle and the effect it will have on the environment.
The Eco Warrior’s programs focus on education students, staff, faculty and the community at large about sustainability initiatives on environmental management and human consumption to improve the quality of life not only for the present, but also for the future.
In the month of April, the USU Eco Warrior’s held events such as Sustainability Week, What’s Your Carbon Footprint?, Getting Back to the Organics, Stanislaus’ Earth Day, and A Green Faire. In the month of May, the USU Eco Warriors will be celebrating Arbor Day, and educating students on the conservation of forestry across the country and locally with material on how deforestation affects the community, as well as the world. Also, at the end of the semester in May, the Eco Warriors will also be conducting a School Supplies Round-Up, which promotes recycling through the collection of unwanted school materials, such as notebooks, binders, paper, pens, etc., to ensure proper recycling of the materials.
