Citing safety and security concerns, based on numerous requests from law enforcement officers and community members, CSUS President Hamid Shirvani and student leaders at California State University, Stanislaus decided today to cancel the September 16, 2006, student-sponsored concert featuring Papa Roach and E-40. A new Warrior Welcome Back Concert will be scheduled in the immediate future to welcome new and returning students to campus.
Concerns leading to the concert’s cancellation were centered on evidence and documentation presented by law enforcement officials regarding the brawl in downtown Modesto on Sunday, September 3, 2006. In addition, as cited by law enforcement officials, E-40 is an artist associated with erratic and violent behavior as part of a growing “hyphy” movement.
Associated Students Inc. President Chelsea Minor said, “Based on the concern for the safety of our students, and the pressure placed on ASI from the law enforcement officials from Stanislaus County and the Vice President for Student Affairs, it was apparent that it would not be in the best interest of students to move forward with the concert. ”
President Shirvani said, “Law enforcement officers and community members expressed a great deal of concern to me that no amount of police officers and security personnel could prevent the potential for violence on the University campus and throughout the Turlock and Modesto communities. Our priority is to keep our students and citizens safe.”
President Shirvani continued, “I am proud of our students for making a difficult, but responsible decision. It shows their desire to be good corporate citizens both now and into the future as adults.”
