On Tuesday evening, the Turlock City Council will considering closing portions of Downtown for upcoming events, including a new recurring street food rally.
Kiwanis Club of Turlock, Turlock Certified Farmers Market, and Blown Away Salon have all requested for close portions of Downtown Turlock for each’s respective events.
If approved by Council, Turlock could see a “Main StrEAT Food Rally” hosted Downtown Turlock during summer. Kiwanis Club of Turlock is requesting E. Main Street between Thor and Palm streets be closed on May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, and Sept. 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Specific details of the food rally series are not available at this time.
Turlock Certified Farmers Market, which recently announced that they are moving to Saturdays this year, will also be on the move to a different location Downtown.
Council will consider closing E. Main Street between Thor and Palm streets 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday from May 2 to Oct. 31. Last year, the Farmers Market took place on S. Broadway between W. Main Street and A Street.
On Sunday, April 19, Blown Away Salon is requesting Center Street between E. Main Street and Crane Avenue for a “Found in Turlock Bridal Showcase.” The showcase would be hosted from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“The events are designed to be positive in nature with a desire to bring people into the downtown area,” reads the staff report.
According to the staff report, all of the events have been presented to the Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association (TDPOA) for their input and no concerns were expressed.
Currently, Council allows street closure delegation to the City Manager and City Engineer for residential street closures, but the same delegation does not exist in other areas, such as closures within industrial and commercial areas, and thus require specific approval.
Council will have the power to approve or deny any number of the requests made for the three events.
On Tuesday, Turlock City Council will also:
- Consider appropriating $368,000 for repairs to Drew Avenue, including storm drain improvements and roadway resurfacing.
- Consider reclassification of several positions within the City of Turlock.
- Hear a presentation from Dr. Kevin Mackey on “Pit Crew CPR” and recognize three Turlock firefighters.
Turlock City Council will meet 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Yosemite Room of City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
