We Care Program is set to open their cold weather shelter on December 1st. An open house at 213 S. Broadway, will be held tonight at 5:30pm with tours of the facility, explore the available dates on the calendar and learn about how to utilize this new procedure in yet another collaborative effort to fund raise for our community.
The mission of the WE CARE Program is to provide transitional and emergency shelter, day center resources, and support services, in collaboration with other agencies, to assist homeless individuals in becoming self-sufficient. The We Care Program (WCP) provides shelter services for 38 homeless men a night during the worst part of the winter. These individuals fall at or below 80% of the area median income and are ineligible for assistance from any other social service agency. The shelter operates between December 1st and March 31st and is open seven days a week from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
The We Care Shelter provides a warm, safe environment for individuals who would otherwise be sleeping on the street during the cold winter months. Dinners are provided nightly by volunteers who purchase, prepare, and serve the meal. During the 2010/2011 shelter season the We Care Program served 135 unduplicated individuals and provided 3,874 shelter nights. Our agency is instrumental in reducing the impact on our community’s municipal and healthcare services. The We Care Program is also a plus for the business community in that we offer the homeless a place to sleep other than in their doorways.
The agency offers onsite referrals for services including, but not limited to, drug and alcohol cessation programs, the HPRP program, transitional housing, essential services, and literacy training. Alcoholics’ Anonymous meetings are held on site three mornings a week.
