The City of Turlock will be holding a General Municipal Election on Tuesday, November 6th for the election of certain officers, including two City Council Members and a City Treasurer.
Council seats belonging to Councilwoman Mary Jackson and Councilwoman Amy Bublak are both up for election, yet neither Jackson nor Bublak have stated whether or not they will be running for reelection.
In the March 07, 2012, TurlockCityNews.com article, “Turlock City Council 2012 Election Race Now Has Two Confirmed Candidates,” both current Council Members made statements suggesting it was still early regarding their announcement to run or not.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner Steven Nascimento has announced his candidacy for City Council, as has Turlock resident Sergio Alvarado.
Nascimento currently works as the District Director for California’s 12th Senate District, represented by Senator Anthony Cannella (R), and previously Nascimento worked as the District Director for U.S. Representative Dennis Cardoza (D) in California’s 18th Congressional District. Prior to his two Director positions, Nascimento worked within the Planning Department of the City of Modesto after graduating from CSU Stanislaus with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
Alvarado currently works for the U.S. Postal Service in Livingston, however, he has lived in the City of Turlock for the past four years. Alvarado is actively involved in the community, and attends a majority of the City Council meetings to participate in community decision making by sharing his thoughts and opinions on City issues.
At last Tuesday’s City Council Meeting, the Council approved adopting the regulations for candidates for elective office pertaining to candidate’s statements submitted to the voters at a General Municipal Election, and setting the deposit fee which will be required of candidates who elect to have a candidate’s Statement of Qualifications printed in the ballot pamphlet.
The Stanislaus County Elections Division has estimated that the cost for publishing a candidate’s Statement of Qualifications in the November ballot will be approximately $1,250 for entities that have 25,000 to 50,000 registered voters. As the City of Turlock currently has approximately 28,500 registered voters, staff has recommended a deposit of $1,250 for candidates desiring to submit a Statement of Qualifications.
The Council also declared that the County Election Department is authorized to verify signatures for nomination papers submitted by the City Clerk of the City of Turlock; set up and arrange for election precincts, polling places, voting booths, and election officers; publish notice of election officers and polling places; and canvas the returns of the General Municipal Election.
Each candidate for elective office may prepare a candidate’s statement on an appropriate form provided by City Clerk, Kellie Weaver. The statement may include the name, age, and occupation of the candidate and a brief description of no more than 200 words of the candidate’s education and qualifications expressed by the candidate.
The statement shall not include party affiliation of the candidate, nor membership or activity in partisan political organizations. The statement shall be filed in the office of the City Clerk at the time the candidate’s nomination papers are filed.
The nomination-filing period will be July 16 through August 10, 2012. If an incumbent does not run for reelection, the deadline will be extended 5 days.
