Cardboard bales set afire behind Walmart Sunday night

On Sunday, July 25th, 2021, at approximately 8:55 pm, the Turlock Fire Department received a call of a fire behind Walmart Neighborhood Market located at 2480 Geer Rd. Engine 31 and Engine 33 were dispatched.

Engine 33 arrived on scene a few minutes later to find a large stack of cardboard bales on fire behind the business. Captain 33 assumed command and had crews begin attack. The fire was quickly brought under control, however, it took a while to fully put it out. City crews were requested to respond with a dozer to break apart the bales so the fire could be properly put out.

Due to the high amount of embers cast, the neighborhood behind the fire was patrolled to ensure there was no extension. Once city crews arrived on scene, the fire was fully put out.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be arson as there have been several similar-type fires at this location before. Anyone with information regarding this fire is encouraged to contact Fire Marshal Mark Gomez at 209-669-2119 or by email at MGomez@turlock.ca.us.
