Driving down the northern stretch of Quincy Road, Turlockers may notice wild sunflower patches growing.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the sunflower is a native domesticated crop.

The USDA also explains that, originally cultivated by North American Indians, it has a “long and interesting history as a food plant” as, Indians increased the seed size by approximately 1,000 percent; because of their repeated selection of the largest seeds they gradually changed the genetic composition of the plant.
