At about 12:40am Sunday morning, Turlock Police responded to a traffic collision at WIS&G Insurance Agency in the 600 block of E. Canal Drive.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a white 2023 Kia K5 that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The vehicle only had one occupant, its driver, later identified as off-duty Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Shannon, 27, of Denair.

Shannon was found passed out behind the wheel and had to be woken up by a responding officer. He was bleeding from the arm, so Turlock Fire and American Medical Response were requested, but he refused transport.

Officers began their investigation and noticed that Shannon was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence. He had also previously admitted to them that he was drunk, but was unable to participate in standardized field sobriety tests due to his level of intoxication.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined that Shannon was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.

Shannon provided two breath samples at the scene as required by California’s implied consent law.

Afterward, Shannon was placed in the back of a patrol vehicle so that officers could complete their paperwork, at which point he vomited.

Shannon was released on a citation on the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also issued a driver’s license suspension order and his vehicle was impounded.

It’s currently unknown how the collision occurred.

Turlock City News reached out to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office via email for comment, but didn’t get a reply.
