The California Highway Patrol is increasing enforcement along Highway 99 to help prevent accidents caused by speeding.
The majority of collisions that end in injury or death are caused by a driver who is speeding or driving aggressively. To help prevent these accidents, the CHP has received a federally-funded grant titled, “Reduce Aggressive Driving Incidents and Tactically Enforce Speed.”
Starting April 18, the CHP will be out in full force on Highway 99 between Modesto and the Los Angeles County line, specifically targeting errant drivers. The anti-speed campaign will run through Sept. 30.
Officers will be looking for drivers who are speeding, passing unsafely, following too closely, improperly turning, driving distractedly, or not wearing their seatbelts.
“The California Highway Patrol takes a proactive approach in keeping our roadways safe,” said Jim Abrames, CHP Central Division Chief. “The Reduce Aggressive Driving Incidents and Tactically Enforce Speed grant allows our dedicated highway patrol officers to enhance highway safety by addressing speed, unsafe turning movement and other collision causing violations through education and enforcement.”
CHP reports that there were 1,215 traffic collisions on Highway 99 between Modesto and LA county, including 74 fatal collisions and 519 injury collisions, between January 2012 and May 2013. From Jan. 1, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2013 CHP officers issued 55,632 speeding citations in the same portion of Highway 99.
