A man was arrested for the second time this week after he fled from police, assaulted a police officer, and swallowed what is suspected to be methamphetamine.

Around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, Turlock police responded to the 10 block of North Avenue after a resident in the area reported seeing a suspicious person.

The first officer arrived on scene and the suspect, later identified as Richard Oboyle, 41, fled. The officer initiated a foot pursuit, Turlock police spokesperson Lt. Ron Reid said.

Oboyle was chased to the corner of Geer Road and Tuolumne Road, in front of Farmers & Merchants Bank.

Oboyle attempted to discard some narcotics by swallowing a bag of what is suspected to be methamphetamine. Oboyle told police that it was meth that he had swallowed, Reid said.

While being apprehended, Oboyle was swinging at officers and assaulted one of them, Reid said.

Police were finally able to get Oboyle in custody, and he was taken to an area hospital due to the meth he had swallowed.

Oboyle was arrested for resisting arrest, assault, destruction of evidence, possession of a controlled substance, and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was given a citation and released into the custody of Emanuel Medical Center.

Oboyle’s arrest on Wednesday came only days after he was arrested on Monday for resisting arrest and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

A resident of the 1700 block of North Denair Avenue reported a suspicious person trespassing in neighborhood backyards around 3:07 p.m. Monday, later determined to be Oboyle.

Oboyle fled on foot through the neighborhood once police arrived on scene.

A short foot pursuit ensued and Oboyle was taken into custody.
