52 Carob trees will be removed from the Canal Drive median between Geer Road and East Main Street in conjunction with the street repair project planned for late summer of 2009.
The Carob trees roots are responsible for destroying the Canal Drive roadway. The roots have cracked and lifted up a great deal of the left lanes’ roadway. Most people site the worst part of the road as being in front of TID and the War Memorial building.
The City will be reconstructing Canal Drive and the median curb later this summer. In order to ensure the longevity of the roadway improvements, the Carob trees need to be removed.
The smaller Crape Myrtle trees will remain and the City plans to plant new trees to replace the removed Carob trees.
The City of Turlock contracted Atlas Tree Surgery, of Santa Rosa, to remove the trees. Tree removal began on Monday. Portions of the left lanes on Canal Drive will be closed.
