Brown Elementary School’s sixth-grade students Juliette Hernandez and Matthew Brown are this month’s Turlock Unified School District Character Counts award recipients.
This month’s Character Counts theme is citizenship.
Juliette, 11, has served on the Brown student council for the past two school years, which interestingly enough is not an elected position. Upper-grade representatives rotate leadership each month, making decisions in place of a president and vice president.
Juliette’ favorite subjects are English and Social Studies, and she is very active in her church youth group. Her proudest moment of her young life is when she was chosen as Character Counts student of the month for TUSD.
Her wish for the world is that everyone would respect each other, and not have so much fighting and arguing. When she grows up she would like to become an author because she loves writing, or a therapist to help people. She would like to go to college at Stanford, the University of California Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz or California State University Stanislaus.
“Juliette is an asset to my classroom because she always puts forth her best effort and I can trust her with any task,” said Juliette’s teacher, Mrs. Mendes.
Juliette’s mother Renee and her father, Casinova “Nova”, and grandparents Abraham and Ester, are very proud of her accomplishments. Sadly her father passed away from cancer six months ago, but undoubtedly he was beaming with pride in heaven.
Matthew Brown, 11, loves the people at his school and how teachers have helped him to learn and become mature. His favorite subject is mathematics because he says it is fun, and he also plays clarinet in the school band.
In his spare time he enjoys reading books, participating in his church activities and taekwondo – he is already a red belt.
Matthew’s wish for the world is that everyone lives in peace,and as for his future plans he is undecided. He has plenty of time to craft his plan!
“Matthew consistently exhibits responsibility both inside the classroom as well as out. He is also always willing to help out his classmates at any given time,” said his teacher Mrs. Watts.
