One of Turlock's most notoriously bumpy roads will soon be repaved, pending Turlock City Council action on Tuesday.
Councilmembers are expected to approve an $887,037.25 project to repave Monte Vista Avenue between Crowell and Geer roads.
The project would see the installation of a rubberized asphalt overlay, similar to that used in the recent rehabilitation of Fulkerth Road. Access ramps would also be upgraded to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
A concrete median would be installed as well, closing the opening at the intersection of Monte Vista Avenue and Niagara Street. The crossing is being closed as a safety measure, Turlock staff says, due to the high number of traffic collisions caused by the unprotected left turn.
The work would be performed by low bidder Teichert Construction of Stockton.
The $1,077,371.01 total cost includes a construction contingency, inspections, and engineering work. The project would be funded with $140,000 in gas tax revenues, and $938,676 in state Regional Surface Transportation Program grants.
On Tuesday, the Turlock City Council is also expected to:
• Purchase 24,766 square feet of land at 1525 Dianne Drive for $247,660. The land would be used to realign Dianne Drive so that it connects directly to Auto Mall Drive. The old segment of Dianne Drive would be abandoned.
The work is part of an effort to expand the Fulkerth Road/Highway 99 interchange. Per state law, the current Dianne Drive is too close to the proposed interchange.
• Hear an update on activities at Denair Park. Nearby community members have been upset with the growing vagrant population at the park.
• Proclaim October 2013 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The month is supported by the Turlock Fire Department, which is raising funds for an Emanuel Medical Center cancer endowment through the sale of t-shirts.
• Approve a $300,000 contract with Carollo Engineers, Inc., to produce a master plan update for Turlock's wastewater facility.
• Allocate $5,000 to pay for Turlock residents' sidewalk, curb, gutter, and driveway repair permits. Up to $157.50 in permit fees would be offset through the fund. Turlockers are responsible for maintaining and repairing their own sidewalks, even if damaged by the growth of city-owned trees.
• Approve placing liens on properties for costs associated with the abatement of weeds, obnoxious growth, debris, or abandoned vehicles.
• In closed session, conference with labor negotiators representing all Turlock employees.
The Turlock City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Yosemite Room of Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
