TURLOCK — The Warriors continue to roll at their own Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno as they swept their opponents on Saturday. Cal State Stanislaus defeated Hawaii Pacific, 4-2 and Chaminade, 10-7, to finish pool play with a perfect 5-0 record.
Cal State Stanislaus, winner of eight of its last nine games, improved to 24-11 on the season and will be the top team from its pool heading into Sunday’s Gold Championship bracket play. The Warriors will play at 11:15 a.m. at Pedretti Sports Complex against a team to be determined.
On Saturday, the Warriors continued their hot streak with solid offense. Against Hawaii Pacific (29-8), the Warriors erased an early 1-0 deficit with three runs in the second and third innings for a 3-1 lead. Britney Borba tripled to lead off the second and scored on a sacrifice play by Kimiko Wright. In the third, Meghan Franksen drew an one-out walk and later scored on a single by Jennifer Arnold.
Genseal followed Franksen with a double and scored on a hit by Wright.
Wright drove in her third run of the game in the fifth on another sacrifice fly to left to plate Genseal, who led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double by Arnold.
Genseal went 3-for-3 with a double, Arnold had two hits and Wight drove in three runs to lead Stanislaus and to help Arnold pick up victory from the pitching circle. Arnold tossed four innings and allowed a run on four hits. Stacey Hains threw the final three innings and gave up a run on three hits to earn a save.
In the nightcap against Chaminade (7-29), CSUS turned a 4-2 deficit with a three-run fourth that was highlighted by a Erica McIntyre two- run single. Genseal also drove in McIntyre in the frame. Stanislaus then tagged on five runs in the fifth, including a three-run homer by Franksen to left. McIntyre also drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
Leading 10-4, Chaminade got three runs in the seventh when Shalin Yamaguchi belted a three-run homer off Jessica Gaumnitz to pull within three. Gaumnitz came in in the sixth and pitched 1 2/3 innings. Arnold picked up the win in relief giving up just one hit in
2 1/3 innings of work. She came in for starter Hains in the fourth.
Franksen finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs and McIntyre was 2-
for-5 and drove in four runs as part of the Stanislaus 16-hit parade.
In two games, Stanislaus had 24 hits. The Warriors batted .343 with
46 hits — 13 extra-base hits — in five tournament games. Genseal (8- for-16, 3 2B, 4 RBI), Borba (7-for-14, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI), Franksen (7- for-15, 2 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Alyssa Guzman (6-for-14, 2 3B, 3 RBI) are among the offensive leaders for the Warriors during the tournament. Nikky Rissetto is also batting .400.
During this busy week where the Warriors could play up to 12 games, the Warriors are 8-1 so far with three possible games remaining during the single-elimination tournament play on Sunday.
