Carnegie Arts Center to Hold Regional Art Competition

David Fransen

Local artists will soon have the unique opportunity to display their art in the same building as Pablo Picasso’s famous ceramics.

The Carnegie Arts Center is planning a regional art competition and exhibit to run alongside the “Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics from the Rosenbaum Collection” exhibit this fall.

Picasso has been famously quoted as saying, “All that you can imagine is real,” leading to the title of the juried exhibition: “Imagining the Real.”

“Art works begin in the imagination of an artist but have the potential to have a profound impact on a single person, or even millions of people,” said Rebecca Abbott, Executive Director and Curator of the Carnegie Arts Center. “We are seeking entries that have a clear start in the imagination of the artist.”

According to Abbott, the Carnegie Arts Center traditionally holds a regional artist competition to complement a major exhibit. For instance, the Carnegie Arts Center held a regional exhibit entitled “Picturing California” in 2011 when Ansel Adam’s works were on display.

“We’re always interested in the perspective of area artists,” said Abbott. “Every fall we ask artists to submit works that are related to the fall show.”

Submissions can be dreamlike or entirely realistic, either conveying a message or a mood. The Carnegie is asking that works submitted reflect Picasso’s sentiment according to each artist’s individual perspective.

Media for submissions can include oils and acrylics, photography, sculpture, works on paper, mixed media and textiles.

The grand prize winner will be awarded $1,000, with a $250 prize for each first place winner in each media category. Each category will also include honorable mentions.

Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sept. 22. Interested artists from Northern and Central California can contact the Carnegie Arts Center for more information, rules and submission forms at www.carnegieartsturlock.org or by calling (209) 632-5761.
